All the talk about health insurance reform really hits home when people that you care about have been directly affected. More than one woman I know has had to cope with breast cancer, treated successfully, I am happy to say. Their recovery was helped, of course, by the caring people around them. Yet I hesitate to think how they would have managed without health insurance as well as the wonderful treatment they received. It's frightening, even when the worst of it is behind you.
On September 23, 2009 I am pleased to report that the Mets Baseball organization honored participants and supporters of the Avon Walk For Breast Cancer. This included my wife Fran Hawthorne, an accomplished author and journalist who was among those honored on the field before the start of that evening's game. She deserves that honor, and more, for all she has done and been through.
Thank you Mets, Avon and all the people working hard to support cancer and health research of all kinds.
