The ubiquitous service contract, or extended warranty, seems to be creeping into every transaction. As a business model (for the seller) it is a concept that works to increase profits. For the buyer, not so much.
Here is a link to an article that suggests creating your own "warranty" fund. If nothing else, consider the concept. I haven't bought an extended warranty / service contract in years. At this point my savings would pay for all new electronic gear for my entire household. I am way ahead of the game.
"Create Your Own 'Extended Warranty' Fund"
A broader implication is that, conceptually, this idea is slipping into other areas, like services. You buy a contract and cancel or terminate before taking advantage of it. The seller keeps all your fees. Sound like health or other insurance? I'll be writing about that in due course.

I totally agree with this. Personally I can't stand monthly charges for warranties. Unless you're in the habit of dropping your cellphone or ipod into the sink, seems like a waste of money to me.
